Hank Arnold Memorial This Weekend at USA!
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 30, 2010) – With the worst of the Arizona desert heat presumably in the books, the wingless forces of the American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region return to action for a pair of nights this weekend at Tucson’s USA Raceway.

The ASCS Canyon Region takes to the 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval for the annual Hank Arnold Memorial, which includes two full nights of competition on Saturday and Sunday.

Leading the way into the weekend is Buckeye’s Charles Davis, Jr., who is vying for a second consecutive series championship after winning five of the series initial ten feature events of the year.

Davis carries a 142-point advantage into the weekend over two-time series champion Jeremy Sherman, who holds a slight advantage over the likes of Mike Martin, R.J. Johnson and Josh Pelkey in a tight battle for second in points.

The balance of the current top ten in ASCS Canyon points includes Andrew Reinbold, Ronnie Clark, Dalten Gabbard, Brian Hosford and Justin Quinn.

Rick Ziehl is the defending Hank Arnold Memorial after topping the first edition of the event held at USA Raceway last September. The previous year, Andrew Reinbold snapped a streak of four Jeremy Sherman wins in the Arnold Memorial by topping the final Arnold event at Manzanita.

Racing action on both Saturday and Sunday at USA Raceway is slated to go green at 6:45 p.m.

The 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval is located east of Tucson off I-10 Exit 268, then 1.6 mile south on Craycroft Road, which turns into Los Reales. For more information, contact the track at 520-574-8515.

The ASCS Canyon Region is currently slated for 18 overall nights of competition in 2010, including 13 nights in Arizona, a two-night Fourth of July weekend in New Mexico and pair of trips to California’s Perris Auto Speedway.

In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of ten different Regions throughout the nation.

ASCS Canyon and Southwest Schedules Revealed
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (January 26, 2010) – Race fans in and around Arizona will be treated to the best of both ASCS worlds in 2010, as both the winged American Sprint Car Series Southwest Region and wingless Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region have announced 15-race schedules for the upcoming season.

The winged ASCS Southwest forces will tackle a handful of tracks in Arizona and New Mexico, while the topless ASCS Canyon contingent ventures to three tracks in the same states.

Tucson’s USA Raceway will once again host the heaviest slate of events with seven winged Southwest nights and ten topless nights. Both series will open and close the season at USA Raceway, with the March 13 ASCS Canyon Region opener followed by the ASCS Southwest lidlifter seven nights later.

Following Manzanita Speedway’s 2009 closure, both the ASCS Southwest and Canyon Regions will return to the Phoenix area in 2010 with events at Peoria’s Canyon Speedway Park. The winged cars will take to the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval on May 22, while the wingless aces toss the CSP clay on three separate occasions.

New Mexico’s Aztec Speedway will host a pair of two-day winged weekends, including the annual Floyd Reynolds Memorial in September, as well as a Canyon Region non-winged double on the Fourth of July weekend.

The ASCS Southwest Region will join up with the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters at Las Cruces’ Southern New Mexico Speedway on November 12-13, while also making a return to Prescott Valley Speedway in August.

Both series will finish off the 2010 season at USA Raceway’s 43rd Annual Western World Championships on November 18-20.

Charles Davis, Jr., delivered car owner Jim Massey his first series championship by taking the 2009 ASCS Canyon Region title while Las Cruces shoe Rick Ziehl pulled down his second consecutive ASCS Southwest Region title in 2009.

Davis Charges to 2009 ASCS Canyon Title
TULSA, Okla. (December 26, 2009) - Buckeye, Arizona's Charles Davis, Jr., delivered veteran car owner Jim Massey his first series championship by taking the 2009 Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region title.

After settling for runner-up point honors over each of the previous two seasons, there was no stopping "Chargin'" Charles in 2009, as he reeled off three wins and never finished lower than sixth in nine feature events.

Davis, Jr., outdistanced Phoenix shoe R.J. Johnson for the crown, with Nathan High settling for the show position for the second year in a row. Stevie Sussex nipped series Rookie of the Year Johnathon Henry for fourth by just three points.

The ASCS Canyon Region closed out the season with Oklahoma's Brady Bacon besting a field of 52 entries for the $5,000 winner's share in the wingless portion of the 42nd Annual Western World Championships at Tucson's USA Raceway.

The ASCS Canyon Region's third season of competition was nearly wiped out entirely due to the unexpected closure of Phoenix' Manzanita Speedway in April. After Jesse Hockett brought the curtains down on Manzy with a win in the Donnie Davis Memorial atop the storied half-mile oval in April, the season was salvaged when Tucson's USA Raceway picked up several dates. New Mexico's Hollywood Hills Speedway picked up several dates as well, completing just one weekend before structural issues forced the closure of the troubled facility.

ASCS Canyon Region Feature Winners (6 winners in 10 features): Charles Davis, Jr. 3, Brady Bacon 2, Jesse Hockett 2, Jerry Coons, Jr. 1, R.J. Johnson 1, Rick Ziehl 1.

Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region Points (Top Ten): 1. Charles Davis, Jr. (Buckeye, AZ) 1,164, 2. R.J. Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) 1,109, 3. Nathan High (Goodyear, AZ) 1,100, 4. Stevie Sussex (Laveen, AZ) 1,016, 5. Johnathon Henry (Stockton, CA) 1,013, 6. Ronnie Clark (Tucson, AZ) 990, 7. Andrew Reinbold (Gilbert, AZ) 966, 8. Mike Martin (Yuma, AZ) 957, 9. Jeremy Sherman (Surprise, AZ) 900, 10. Bruce St. James (Phoenix, AZ) 890.

    Ziehl Takes DTC Challenge Title!
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (October 28, 2009) – New Mexico's Rick Ziehl proved to be Mr. Versatile in the Southwest by winning the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series title, collecting the $1,200 bonus that goes along with the title.

With the series spanning eight events among both the winged ASCS Southwest Region and the wingless Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region, the Las Cruces racer put the finishing touches on the Challenge title with a third-place run in Saturday night's ASCS Southwest main event at Tucson's USA Raceway.

While Mother Nature nixed a pair of the eight scheduled events, five different drivers topped at least one of the Challenge events with Ziehl the only driver to rack up a pair of wins.

Finishing off the podium just once in the six events, Ziehl scored a winged ASCS Southwest win on July 4 and then added a wingless ASCS Canyon Region victory on September 6. Other Challenge feature event winners included Charles Davis, Jr., and R.J. Johnson in wingless action along with Ben Gregg and Johnny Herrera in winged competition.

A total of $3,000 will be distributed among the five drivers that competed in all six rounds of the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge, including points runner-up Ronnie Clark ($600), third-place finisher Joshua Hodges ($500), fourth-ranked Charles Davis, Jr. ($400) and fifth-ranked Mike Martin ($300).

Final Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series Points (Top Eight):

    1. Rick Ziehl (Las Cruces, NM) 848
    2. Ronnie Clark (Tucson, AZ) 806
    3. Joshua Hodges (Tijeras, NM) 770
    4. Charles Davis, Jr. (Buckeye, AZ) 761
    5. Mike Martin (Yuma, AZ) 725
    6. R.J. Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) 570
    7. Jessica Van Dyke (Tucson, AZ) 522
    8. Andrew Reinbold (Gilbert, AZ) 448

Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series Winners:

Date – Track (Region) – Winner
May 23 Hollywood Hills Speedway (Canyon Region) – Rained Out
May 24 Hollywood Hills Speedway (Canyon Region) – Charles Davis, Jr.
July 4 USA Raceway (Southwest) – Rick Ziehl
September 5 USA Raceway (Canyon Region) – Rained Out
September 6 USA Raceway (Canyon Region) – Rick Ziehl
September 19 USA Raceway (Southwest) – Ben Gregg
October 10 USA Raceway (Canyon Region) – R.J. Johnson
October 24 USA Raceway (Southwest Region) – Johnny Herrera

While the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series is in the books, the ASCS Canyon and Southwest Regions still have some unfinished business with both series titles to be determined at the upcoming 42nd Annual Kronik Energy Western World Championships presented by Old Tucson Studios at Tucson's USA Raceway on November 19-21.

Charles Davis, Jr., takes a 40-point lead over R.J. Johnson into the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region portion of the Western World, while Ziehl's advantage over Ben Gregg in the ASCS Southwest title race is just a dozen points.

The ASCS Southwest Region takes on the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters contenders for the $15,000-to-win winged portion of the Western World, with the wingless ASCS Canyon Region portion of the Western World offering up $5,000 to win.
