| ASCS on the Verge of More Fireworks! |
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (July 2, 2009) – Coming off a weekend that featured nine different winners in ten events throughout the country in which 228 different drivers took part in at least one card, another action-packed slate of American Sprint Car Series competition is on tap for this Fourth of July Holiday weekend.
Headlining this weekend's action is the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters much anticipated return to Riverside Speedway in West Memphis, AR, for the Rock 'N Roll 50, with another half dozen Regional events on the slate as well.
Reigning Lucas Oil Sprint Car champion Jason Johnson of Eunice, LA, topped last weekend's headliner by besting a 53-car field in the Third Annual Daniel McMillin Memorial at Missouri's Lake Ozark Speedway, moving into a tie for the Lucas Oil points lead with event runner-up Shane Stewart in the process.
Gary Wright extended his streak of Lucas Oil ASCS National events competed in to 203 with a sixth-place finish, keeping the lead pair of Johnson and Stewart within ten points while closing in on Toby Brown's record of 212 National events competed-in a row.
Missouri shoes Jesse Hockett and Randy Martin both made their 50th career Lucas Oil ASCS National feature starts Saturday night at Lake Ozark Speedway.
In other action, Dustin Daggett was the only driver to double up last weekend by sweeping the pair of ASCS Sprints on Dirt events in Michigan at Mt. Pleasant and I-96, extending his SOD season win total to seven triumphs in nine starts.
Eric Baldaccini, who has logged the most nights of ASCS competition thus far in 2009 with 24 starts, bested the Lone Star Region at Boyd Raceway on Friday night for his second win of the season after a Gulf South win in May with Kevin Ramey adding his second Lone Star score of the season atop Cowtown Speedway's high-banked clay oval the next night.
The ASCS Northwest and Rocky Mountain Regions squared off at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, MT, with Jared Ridge snaring his first career series win over Friday night's 29-car field and then Roger Crockett besting Saturday's 30-car field for his second Northwest win of the year.
Chad Humston moved atop the Midwest point charts by topping Friday's Midwest vs. Northern Plains Showdown at South Dakota's I-90 Speedway, Charles Davis, Jr., made it two-for-two in the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Challenge with a Saturday night Canyon Region win at Tucson's USA Raceway and Jared Zimbardi broke back into Patriots victory lane with a late move at Stateline Speedway in Jamestown, NY, on Saturday night.
This weekend marks the second of five consecutive weekends of competition for the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters. Saturday's scheduled 50-lap feature atop the ¼-mile Riverside Speedway gumbo clay oval is believed to be the first such 50-lapper in series history. Local ace A.G. Rains took victory honors in the series last visit to West Memphis in September of 2005.
The Midwest Region gets an early jump on the Holiday weekend with a Thursday night outing at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway before moving on to McCool Junction's Junction Motor Speedway on Friday night.
The ASCS Gulf South Region tackles the 5/16-mile Texana Raceway Park in Edna, TX, on Friday and Saturday, the Patriots and Sprints on Dirt collide at Canada's Ohsweken Speedway for the Northern Summer Nationals on Friday night and the Southwest Region fires back to action at Tucson's USA Raceway on Saturday night.
After last weekend's monster weekend of competition, a total of 645 drivers have competed in at least one ASCS event thus far in 2009 with 46 different winners in 75 feature events.
The Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters carries an average of 55.6 cars per event into this weekend's Rock 'N Roll 50.

| The Tribute - Hockett Remembers The Wrench |
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (July 1, 2009) – He never met a stranger. And he could be counted upon to greet you with a smile and an entertaining story or two of some form, whether it be one of the racing variety or otherwise.
But, fate stepped in three years ago today, cutting Daniel McMillin's life short in a car accident at just 22 years of age.
"The Wrench" and his cousin, known in popular culture today as Jesse "The Rocket" Hockett, had been virtually inseparable.
Chasing Brodix Rookie of the Year honors on the Lucas Oil ASCS National trail in 2006, the pair of Missouri kids had grown into young men while teaming up for approximately 70 feature wins along the way since a 1998 start.
Among those were a pair of $10,000 triumphs in Lakeside Speedway's annual wingless classic in Kansas City; wins that made it impossible to ignore Jesse and Daniel on the racing radar. Especially after that first one in 2003, when Daniel threw a winning setup on the car straight off the Jimmy Sills "how-to" video in what was just Jesse's second wingless outing.
Already establishing that reputation of racing anything, anywhere, anytime, Jesse and Daniel were more often than not a two-man operation on the road in those days. And, traveling those long, lonely miles in the darkness of night on the way to the next dirt track, conversation would naturally shift to what the future might hold. With young men and big dreams, how could it be otherwise?
While consumed with the dirt track wars of Sprint Car racing, Daniel also held a similar passion for music.
One of Daniel's dreams was to someday sign a recording contract and make it big on the country music scene. And, he vowed that when that happened, he would furnish Jesse with all the latest and greatest racing equipment so that "The Rocket" could fulfill all of his Sprint Car racing dreams.
Daniel offered up just a couple of stipulations for that racing operation, though. The car would have to carry a hot pink paint scheme. And, it would also have to be emblazoned with a big guitar.
All too often though, dreams die young. And, in this case, some dreams were dashed on a winding, rural Missouri highway in the early a.m. of July 1, 2006.
This past Saturday night, 53 Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters competitors from throughout the nation gathered at Missouri's Lake Ozark Speedway to pay tribute at the Third Annual Daniel McMillin Memorial, which played out before a host of Hockett and McMillin family members and friends along with several thousand fans.
Opening ceremonies included a tribute to the man that so many have missed around the race track for the last three years, with presentations made to Jesse, Daniel's mother and the McMillin family after young Reagan Hockett sang the National Anthem.
Two-time race winner, and three-time by the end of the night, Jason Johnson presented Daniel's Mother with a shirt signed by all the competitors, commenting that, "We had a lot of fun with Daniel going up and down the road. He was a great guy and I'm just honored that we can be a part of this race."
The microphone moved on to Jesse, the one person that probably knew Daniel as well as anybody.
"Daniel got along with everyone, even if he got into a disagreement with somebody it never lasted long," an emotional Hockett explained as he thanked the crowd. "There are so many people here that Daniel made a positive impact on. I miss him, I think we all do."
Then, when it was time to get down to the business at hand and the night's first heat race rolled out, there it was.
Jesse Hockett's VKCC Motorsports/Tom Buch Racing No. 13 had a different look for this night only. You guessed it. The No. 13 was all decked out in hot pink with a big ol' guitar emblazoned upon the top wing.
That's one dream of Daniel's that didn't die. Jesse made sure of that. Posted 6/30/2009 |

In 2009 the ASCS banner will be waved proudly north of the border with the creation of the new ASCS CanWest division.
Based out of Edmonton, Alberta the first ASCS Canadian sanction is putting the finishing touches on its schedule that includes supporting events with the ASCS Northwest, Rocky Mountain and Northern Plains divisions.

The upstart CanWest region will be hosting the majority of their events at the home track of Castrol Raceway, including the 55th year of the Gold Cup Weekend paying a hefty $5,000 to win. Also on tap is the $2,000 to win ASCS Mid-Canadian Invitational in Winnipeg, Manitoba, that will feature the CanWest and Northern Plains regions going head-to-head for Canada's first ever all ASCS show.
The 2009 season will also see the newest region support the efforts of ASCS racing in Montana with 2 separate weekends in Great Falls, the first being a triple threat for fans with teams from the CanWest, Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions waging war at Electric City Speedway. "I really want to thank Tommie Estes Jr. and Greg Burgess for their support in this as well", states Gold. | ASCS 2008 - Reaching New Heights |
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (November 24, 2008) – The American Sprint Car Series staggering growth and popularity continued as the sanctioning body set new marks over the course of 2008, its 17th year of activity.
With a dozen Regional series in addition to the O'Reilly ASCoT National Tour, the ASCS logged a record total of 205 nights of competition into the books in 2008 with an additional 37 nights lost to inclement weather.
A total of 963 different drivers, another record setting mark, competed in at least one ASCS event in 2008 as the series contested events at 88 tracks throughout 26 different states as well as the Canadian province of Ontario.
Reeling in the lion's share of victory loot and headlines was Louisiana's Jason Johnson, who picked off eleven National Tour wins en route to his first $50,000 ASCS National championship.
"The Ragin' Cajun" picked off a half dozen ASCS Gulf South feature wins as well to run his overall ASCS win total for 2008 to 17, matching the win total he posted in both 2006 and 2007, extending his number of ASCS wins over the past three seasons to 51 triumphs.
In addition to his 17 ASCS scores, Johnson also won Knoxville Raceway's Brodix Tournament of Champions as well as two of the three $6,000-to-win legs of the Ollie's Challenge. After topping the Eldora portion of the Ollie's Challenge, a Williams Grove score in the third and final leg netted a $50,000 bonus.
After dethroning four-time ASCS National champion Gary Wright, Johnson is set to defend his crown aboard Lanny Row's The Shop Motorsports No. 41 with a $250,000 point fund and a dozen or so televised events on the VERSUS Network among the highlights of the much-anticipated 2009 season for the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters.
Johnson topped a list of 87 different overall feature winners in 2008, with a dozen drivers joining him among the ranks of ASCS champions for the season.
Four drivers repeated as Regional champions this year including Jeremy Sherman (Canyon), Brandon Berryman (Gulf South), Lee Grosz (Northern Plains) and Brian McClelland (Sooner).
Another half dozen drivers captured their first ASCS Regional titles including Don Young (Coastal), Jack Dover (Midwest), Bryan Howland (Patriots), Kenny Adams (Rebel) Derrik Ortega (Rocky Mountain) and Brett Mann (Sprints on Dirt), while Jayme Barnes (Northwest) and Rick Ziehl (Southwest) claimed inaugural Regional championships.
O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National Series
Gary Wright opened the season looking for an unprecedented fifth consecutive ASCS National championship.
But, after consecutive runner-up points finishes in 2006 and 2007, Jason Johnson had other ideas. "The Ragin' Cajun" kicked off the season with a $10,000 score at East Bay Raceway Park's Winter Nationals, only to spot his rivals an advantage when he missed the feature cut on the opening night of the Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals.
Johnson clawed back into contention and broke open a tight battle with Wright and Wayne Johnson with a strong Speedweek performance. Not only was the performance strong enough to launch Johnson to his second Speedweek title, it ultimately propelled him to the $50,000 series crown.

Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region
It's hard enough to beat a guy in a points race when he reaches victory lane 14 times in 27 attempts. And it's about impossible when that guy never finishes any worse than ninth over the course of the year. Which is exactly what Jeremy Sherman did in wingless ASCS action in Arizona, racking up 14 wins, 24 top-fives and 27 top-tens en route to his second consecutive Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region championship.
Sherman outdistanced "Chargin'" Charles Davis, Jr., a winner of five feature events, by 212 markers for the crown, while Missouri invader Jesse Hockett swept all three nights of the season-ending Western World Championships at Manzanita.
ASCS Canyon Region Feature Winners (7 winners in 27 features): Jeremy Sherman 14, Charles Davis Jr. 5, Jesse Hockett 3, Casey Shuman 2, R.J. Johnson 1, Bob Ream, Jr. 1, Andrew Reinbold 1.

Gavin Thomas (Jacksonville, FL) 382.
ASCS Gulf South Region
A blown engine in hot laps on the third night of the season nearly wiped out Brandon Berryman's hopes of a second straight Gulf South title. But the 28-year-old from Missouri City, TX, battled back, picking off feature wins at Houston Raceway Park and 105 Speedway along the way, and snared the championship by just nine points over Greg Rilat with Gary Watson another nine points back.
The nine-point margin, closest in Gulf South history, marked the fifth time in six years that the Gulf South title has been decided by 32 points or less. And Greg Rilat, who has competed in an ASCS Regional record 104 consecutive Gulf South events, finished in the runner-up position in Gulf South points for the fourth time.
ASCS Gulf South Region Feature Winners * (12 winners in 20 features): Jason Johnson 6, Channin Tankersley 3, Brandon Berryman 2, Tommy Bryant 1, Jack Dover 1, Michael Dupuy 1, Bryn Gohn 1, Ryan Hall 1, Greg Rilat 1, Chris Sweeney 1, Kolt Walker 1, Gary Watson 1. * - Includes 1 event co-sanctioned with Coastal Region (won by Channin Tankersley). ASCS Midwest Region
Eighteen-year-old Jack Dover decimated the Midwest Region, stretching out an advantage of 120 points in just seven events. Dover didn't confine his mastery to the Midwest however, also adding wins in Northern Plains, Gulf South and Rocky Mountain action along with a National score in Oklahoma.
ASCS Midwest Region Feature Winners * (4 winners in 7 features): Jack Dover 4, Brian Brown 1, Jason Johnson 1, Wayne Johnson 1.

ASCS Northern Plains Region
Twenty-year-old Lee Grosz added his second Northern Plains title by outdueling Eric Lutz for the crown. ASCS Northwest Region
Jayme Barnes emerged atop a torrid battle for the inaugural ASCS Northwest crown, edging out Jared Ridge by 30 markers for the top position. Barnes and Ridge ranked as the only two drivers to earn starting berths in all 13 events over the course of a rugged campaign, with a pair of podium finishes by Barnes during a championship weekend double in Yakima enough to seal the deal.
In a hole from the outset, Roger Crockett battled back into title contention on the strength of five wins and the ASCS Northwest Speedweek title along the way before settling for third in points after a Yakima skirmish.

After a hit-and-miss schedule in 2007, "Flyin" Bryan Howland returned to the Patriot scene full-time in 2008. And, he came away with the series title, his first under the ASCS banner and second overall Patriot championship after taking the top spot in 2005.
Howland outlasted Jared Zimbardi for the crown, with Zimbardi settling for runner-up honors for the second year in a row as 17 feature wins were spread amongst a dozen drivers in the most competitive Patriot season to date.
Don Adamczyk's stretch of never missing an ASCS Patriots points race ended at 102 when a July 4 crash at Ohsweken's ASCS Northern Nationals forced the Williamsville racer to the sidelines for several events.

In fact, a pair of sixth-place finishes were Adams' only forays outside of the top five as he outdistanced Daytona shoe Matt Tiffany, stepson Bryn Gohn and Washington-native Samantha Taylor for the title. ASCS Rocky Mountain Region
The Rocky Mountain Region had plenty of Albuquerque influence in 2008. While Johnny Herrera won seven times in seven series stops in New Mexico, denying Aztec bounty hunters in the process, fellow Albuquerque shoe Derrik Ortega earned the series crown by 290 points, the most lopsided ASCS title chase of the year.
Ortega picked up three wins of his own and posted 15 top-tens in 15 features en route to becoming the youngest champion in ASCS history at just 17 years of age, leading a Rocky Mountain youth movement that included five teenaged drivers among the top ten (Ortega, Colt Treharn, Chad Corken, Danielle Ossenfort and Jake Ossenfort).

The younger of the McClelland brothers, Brian battled back from an early-season crash at Lawton and then held off Walker as the pair diced for position, and the championship, in the season finale at Cowtown.

Ziehl scored one series win along the way, as he added more championship hardware to a mantel that already included USA Race Park honors in 2007 among others.
Tucson teen Cody Cambensy, who finished third in points, was the only driver to finish among the top ten in all 13 feature events.

| Johnson and McClelland Among Top Honorees |
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (November 16, 2008) – More than $200,000 in cash and contingencies was doled out Saturday night as the American Sprint Car Series National Tour/Sooner Region Awards Banquet took place at the Cherokee Casino in Tulsa, OK.
Eunice, LA, hotshoe Jason Johnson reeled in the lion’s share of the evening’s awards, collecting $50,000 plus contingencies for capturing his first O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National championship along with car owners Alan and Lanny Row of Greenville, TX.
"When I first told my dad about 15 years ago that I wanted to go ASCS racing and win a championship, he just laughed and said 'Yeah right, you're gonna go beat Gary Wright and those guys'," Johnson explained of the early stages of his career.
"I've thought at times along the way that there were bigger and better things out there, but three years ago I got back together with the Row's (Alan and Lanny) and that's the best thing that could have ever happened."
Tulsa-area shoe Brian McClelland became one of just four drivers to repeat as 2008 ASCS Regional champions by collecting American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region championship honors for the second year in a row.
Also receiving top honors over the course of the evening were ASCS2 Micro Sprint champions Jerrod Wilson (Outlaw), Andrew Felker (Non-Wing) and Blake Hahn (Restricted "A" Class).
The balance of the top eleven in ASCS National points and the top nine in Sooner Region points were honored as well along with the top ten in each Micro class.
Joining Johnson as National Tour honorees were series runner-up Gary Wright (Hooks, TX), third-place finisher Wayne Johnson (Oklahoma City, OK), fourth-ranked Zach Chappell (Talala, OK), fifth-ranked Garry Lee Maier (Cimarron, KS), sixth-ranked Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX), seventh-ranked Nick Smith (Broken Arrow, OK), eighth-ranked Kenneth Walker (Sapulpa, OK), ninth-ranked Travis Rilat (Forney, TX), tenth-ranked Gary Taylor (Sapulpa, OK) and 11th-ranked Kathryne Minter (Bedford, TX).
McClelland topped a field of Sooner Region honorees that included Kolt Walker (Graham, TX), Joe Wood, Jr. (Oklahoma City, OK), Matt Covington (Glenpool, OK), Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX), Michael Brown (Lawton, OK), Gary Taylor (Sapulpa, OK), Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX) and Sherman Davis (Sand Springs, OK).
Jason Johnson, Wright, Wayne Johnson, Chappell, Maier, Baldaccini and Minter each received awards for Perfect Attendance on the National Tour, while McClelland, Kolt Walker, Covington and Melton recorded Perfect Attendance on the Sooner slate.
Jason Johnson picked up another $1,500 as the 16th Annual Toyota Tundra ASCS Speedweek champion, with the balance of the top five in ASCS Speedweek points receiving their portion of the $6,500 Speedweek points fund including Zach Chappell, Wayne Johnson, Garry Lee Maier and Gary Wright.
Jason Johnson's crew chief, Philip Dietz, picked up the Brodix Lee Maier Crew Chief of the Year award.
Jason Johnson also picked up the Lowest Average Draw award, the same award he won in 2006.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Gary Taylor received the Highest Average Draw award. Taylor was also presented with the Horizon Award, which is annually awarded to a driver who displays promise of glory in future seasons with ASCS.
Twenty-year-old Eric Baldaccini got the nod in the Brodix Rookie of the Year battle, worth a set of Brodix heads, by edging out fellow rookie contenders Kenneth Walker, Gary Taylor and Kathryne Minter.
Zach Chappell earned the Hard Charger Award by accumulating the most passing points during the 2008 season.
Veteran car owner Scott Brown was presented with the Sportsmanship Award. Brown generously loaned one of his engines to rival Wayne Johnson when the latter ran short of luck over the course of Speedweek.
Kenneth Walker was presented with the Newcomer of the Year award, worth $1,000 in cash.
Seventeen-year-old Kathryne Minter was presented the 2008 Young Lion award, which is annually presented to a promising driver under 21 years of age for their support of the American Sprint Car Series.
Also capturing the ASCS Midwest Region championship in 2008, Nebraska's Jack Dover picked up the 2008 Most Improved Driver award with the ASCS National Tour, an award that also came with a bare set of Brodix cylinder heads.
Several announcements were made over the course of the evening as well, with confirmation that a dozen one-hour events will be televised on the VERSUS Network in 2009 on a two-week delayed basis. There will also be a two-hour 2009 season wrap-up show on SPEED to highlight the 2009 Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters which will feature a schedule of events offering up $6,000 to win and $500 to start along with a $250,000 points fund. The events that will be televised will be announced soon.
The 2009 slate of events for the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters currently consists of 21 solid dates, with another ten tracks awaiting solid dates. Another dozen or so events are under very strong consideration, with a likely total of approximately 40 events in 2009.
The 17th Annual ASCS Speedweek will take place at the same six tracks that hosted the annual event in 2008 with the $3,000-to-win and $300 to start purse in effect. The Speedweek events, which will not be National point races, will include a $10,000 point fund.
Also introduced over the course of the evening was new ASCS employee Mike Sweeton. The veteran Chili Bowl announcer hailing from Joplin, MO, will serve as the traveling announcer for the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters during 2009 while also fulfilling various marketing and promotional efforts in the Tulsa office.
Regarding rules for 2009, it was announced that any team changing engines during the course of a night will be forced to start at the tail of their main event, a rule designed to curb the use of short-lived, high-expense engines.
A revised Passing Points system that will be in use on the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters as well as all Regional Tours was also introduced. The improved system will provide a greater emphasis on positions gained and also deducts points for positions lost, with fewer ties in points also a result.
On the Regional front, it was revealed that the Sooner Region will be divided into Northern and Southern portions. The "Northern" portion, consisting of traditional Sooner Region venues throughout Oklahoma, currently has a dozen events slated for 2009. The "Southern" portion, most likely dubbed the Lone Star Region, currently has approximately 15 events slated throughout Northern Texas in 2009. None of the Sooner or North Texas events are expected to conflict.
The 2008 O’Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series consisted of 34 nights of racing action with no rainouts along the way as 347 different drivers competed in at least one event. The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region slate consisted of 19 events, with 112 drivers taking part in at least one event.
